UK Car Repair: wierd elctrical problem, rotor arm, strobe light

Question
Sorry it's not a Vauxhall, but I was hoping you may have come across this kind of thing before and have the answer I'm looking for. I'm really scratching my head and I'm sure the solution's right in front of me. Anyway, here goes:

Nissan Primera 1991, 1.6 carb without cat. converter.

Car stopped while driving. I've checked all the obvious. Fuel pump, etc. HT is reaching distributor from coil, but no spark at any plug. I've replaced new for old dizzy cap, rotor arm, tried new leads, plugs, etc. All the usual stuff. New for old IC ignition unit. Basically done everything you would normally do. Tested coil primary resistance, and primary to secondary. Seems ok. Only thing I haven't replaced is the coil, even though I've checked it and it seems good.

My question, if HT is reaching the distributor, the IC ignition unit is new and tested good, and I've tried all the normal stuff as detailed above, why isn't there a spark at the plugs? It's doing my head in. Could it still be the coil? When tested with strobe light, HT output from coil is causing strobe to flash consistently, but erratically, eg, rapid then slow then rapid. I just put this down to uneven engine turnover with the starter motor. Any ideas?

Answer
Hi
it does indeed sound odd .... I'm not familiar with the vehicle but I'll give it a go.
Asumming you are POSITIVE you have no spark at the plugs..... is the rotor arm turning when you crank the engine with the dizzy cap off? You are getting spark from the king lead out of the coil to the cap ( at the cap end)?
Might be worth trying a distributor.
Sorry I cant be more help.
Let me know how you get on
