Volkswagen Repair: vw motor info., vw trike, volkswagen repair

Question
QUESTION: I recently got a vw trike from a friend. it has all its parts, though i don't know what works on it and what doesn't. i wanted to go through it and fix it all up, and wanted to start with an engine manual, but don't know how to find out the size or type or year of the motor. the only numbers i found were on the sides of the block. left says 11 VW 000.101.101 b and right says 28 VW 000.101.102
can you tell me how to find out the info on this motor?

ANSWER: Mike,  The numbers you listed are not the engine codes. Check out the attached picture.  Post a follow up with the numbers you find, and I'll give you more info on that engine series.

Here is an example of a "dealer rebuild" engine (scroll to the bottom of the page.)  Zoom in; you will see the VW "recycle" symbol followed by a single letter.  See if yours is similar.

QUESTION: yep. mine has the symbol, followed by an "H". that's it. we're actually beginning to think we may need to rebuild the motor or get a new or rebuilt one to replace it with, because we tried to turn the motor by hand, and it turns until a hard point and won't turn further. we removed the spark plugs on the left of the motor, and it turned past the hard point three times, though it was still a little harder than regular, and then it hit that point again and won't turn past that point anymore, in either direction. any ideas beyond the year and size of the motor? heh. thanks a lot for dealing with my retardation. wish i already knew all these things, but i'm learning, and enjoying it.

Answer
Mike,
Sounds like you might have a 1500.  Regardless, looks like you're going have to tear it down to figure out what the jam is.  You may want to get this manual before you begin:

If you need a rebuild, you'll need to carefully measure the pistons, rods and maybe more (if it turns out to be a non-standard engine size) before you order a kit.
