Volkswagen Repair: 96 VW Jetta, vw jetta, torque converter

Question
QUESTION: I have a 96' Jetta, Recently I have lost power from the engine. When I accelerate I get a high Rev but not a lot of forward motion.

ANSWER: Eddie,
Sounds like the transmission, but what specifically depends on whether you have a manual or automatic.  If it's manual, it's likely the clutch is worn.  Automatic is much more complex, but it could be the torque converter.

QUESTION: I found out that it is my clutch, thank you, but I did get a quote from a mechanic of 1041.11 for parts and labor and I thought that was High. Could you please help as what it should roughly cost.

Answer
Eddie,
This quote is in the ballpark.  Although the clutch is not an awfully complicated part and only about $200-$300 in parts, it requires disconnecting the engine from the transmission, quite a job.  As with any service, labor is the killer.
