Volkswagen Repair: 2004 jetta fuel pump, jetta tdi, olympic emblem

Question
I have a 2004 jetta tdi. It just cranks and won't start, it's not getting fuel.  I changed the fuel filter and it ran and seamed to operate fine, but this morning it started and then died and is back to just cranking without starting.  Would this be a supply pump problem, and if it is, where is it located?

Answer
Hi Tim;
In 2004 Volkswagen introduced the "pumpe duece" engine.  The fuel injectors are the fuel pumps, in a manner of speaking.  There is a fuel pump...high pressure, in the tank, and a low pressure one, at the engine.  "PD" fuel filters can be a problem to change.  You need to be careful to get all of the right parts, in the right sequence.  The "olympic emblem" gasket, and so forth, go only a certain way on the filter.  Is there a smell of diesel under the hood?  Are there any evident leaks...from anything?  Help me with a little more information, please.  How many miles did it run after the fuel filter change?  Did anything get run over on the passenger side where the fuel return cooler is located?
