Volkswagen Repair: Beetle dash vent, pollen filter, dash vents

Question
The open/close wheel on one of the dash vents of my 2000 GL Beetle is not working.  I believe the lever connecting it to the door inside is disconnected.  How does the vent grille come off so I can get access to these parts?

Hi Lou;
These are much easier to get to in ANY other Mk IV Volkswagen.  To get out each individual vent, the entire dash, and center console need to be removed.  On Golfs, and Jetta, you just remove several small pieces of facia material...still a lot of work, but nothing like the Beetles...you might as well replace the pollen filter while you've got the whole thing apart.  "Bentley's" manual should help you with a bunch of diagrams, and pictures.
