Volkswagen Repair: 2001 VW Jetta GLS 2.0L OBD-II error code, vw jetta gls, obd ii code reader

Question
When I plug my OBD-II code reader in, I receive an Error Message.  The vehicle seems to run fine, no issues except for a battery drain the other day..we just bought it with 61000 miles.  What would cause an Error code on the Code reader?  I get no readings whatsover.

Answer
Hi Jim;
Volkswagen is unique as far as I know when it comes to emission controls.  They have an internal set of rules, and tests that are not included anywhere in the EPA, or the Federal Air Standards.  These tests are collectively known as "The Readiness Code."  If the car has no faults they have been cleared, and the car hasn't been driven through the necessary miles, and conditions yet to re-set the readiness code.  Does the scan tool say:  "P0000," or does it say "P1000."  Because, if it does say P1000, it just means the internal tests are not completed yet.  Just keep driving it WITHOUT plugging in your generic scan tool, and wait for the check engine light to come on.  After 11, or 12 "drive cycles".....up to 55 mph, then to a stop, then through city traffic for a while...like 3 minutes or so, then back up to 55 mph, then parked for 8 hours....11, or 12 times, so 2 weeks of normal driving to most people in North America.  If the light has NOT come on, then the readiness code most assuredly set, and you should have no problems for some time.  However, if the check engine light comes on before that 2 weeks is up, you will have a code to find with your hand held device, and you will be able to go back to the person you bought the car from with some "ammunition."  I take it you are suspicious, am I right, or just reading too much into your question?  Try the "drive cycles" first.  You can look up the definition of an OBD II drive cycle on line through a search engine.  Good luck, Jim.  I hope this helps you out.
