Volkswagen Repair: Ignition and starting issue, golf gti, fuel pumps

Question
Hi,
I have a 94 VW Golf.. recently bought it as is.. When i bought it i had to pull on the ignition contact in order for it to start.. I had my local mechanic check it out and no longer have to pull on the contact. However, a new problem came up, when the engine is cool i have to spray some quick start to get it going or it will simply crank but won't turn over.. It worked before i had the ignition checked, now it somply won't turn over ... Any ideas? or Do i have to take it to a VW specialty repair place and shell out a bundle?

Answer
HEY Steve;
This version of Golf, GTI, and Jetta all have a "power distribution relay" that power up the fuel pumps.  Check that it is working correctly first. This is the number one failure.  If not the relay, then check for fuel pressure before, and after the fuel filter.  My experience with your model year was a GTI, recently, that had a bad fuel pump.  Pump is in the tank, so be careful.  The easiest way to start on the pressure test is to go to the fuel rail, on the engine, and test pressure there.  If it's below, say about 35 psi, the pump, and filter need to be replaced.  That should cure it.  You need to stop using starting spray.  It's got ether in it, and doesn't have any lubrication for the cylinder walls, like gasoline does.
Hope this helps you get your problem solved right away.  Good luck, Steve.
