Volkswagen Repair: 1.9 vw tdi, head mechanic, volkswagen tdi

Question
QUESTION: I had oil leaks fixed valve cover an seal on side of engine that they had to move inj pump to fix. I drove car less than 300 miles and it a lifter broke which messed up the head mechanic told me it was due to carbon build up that got sucked in from intake and it had nothing to do with repairs made. now i need a rebuild is what mec said posible

ANSWER: Britt;  I don't know exactly what happened, but why was the injector pump moved?  If the injector pump was NOT correctly timed to the diesel engine, and its' compression stroke, there are many different "catastrophic" failures that can occur.  The injector pump is operated by the timing belt, not just a "multi-ribbed," or "V-belt."  If you don't get the timing perfect, you WILL have a big problem.  In fact, even at the Volkswagen dealerships here in North America the pumps are NOT rebuilt, even by technicians, or even master technicians.  They are all sent back to Germany, and rebuilt...even at the Volkswagen dealers.  So, unless the guy who did the work on your car is VERY familiar with the Volkswagen TDI engine, and that is mostly what he/she works on, then go someplace else.  Find a place that works on nothing but Volkswagens, or predominantly Volkswagens.  Sorry to hear about your problem with your TDI.  They are strong, and fascinating little engines.

QUESTION:  the pump was moved to fix oil leak onside of engine.shop works on vw and audi and he is german no less so what do you think about carbon in the intake

Answer
Highly likely then!
We see a lot of cars with that same problem too, but I've just not heard of breaking lifters, or cam followers...etc.  Just outside my experience.  Watch next week I'll get one though, and I can say.  "Wow, I've heard of that."
Thanks Britt
