Volkswagen Repair: 2003 jetta, powertrain control module, air flow meter

Question
I have a 2003 2.0 liter jetta. The EPC light as well as the check engine light has came on. The dealer ship changed the old brake lights since there was a recall on them. The EPC light is still on. Just this week i had a major tun-up on it. New: fule filter, oil filter, spark plugs, wires were all replace, fluids flushed and refilleed. i have also had the rear brakes changed last week and I also put four new tires on. with all of this done the EPC light and the check engine light is still on. i had the diagnostic test done on it and it said it had low air flow. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Answer
Hello Micah;  It sounds like you like your car, and you take very good care of it.  Yes the "air flow meter" is the device that tells the computer how much air is going through to the cylinders for combustion, and yes, the air flow meter would cause both the EPC light, and the Check engine light to come on.  Did you have the repairs done at the dealer?  I'm surprised they didn't explain this to you if they serviced your car.  The EPC light is normally associate with the "brake light switch" under the dashboard, and it means, "electronic powertrain control."  So, literally, anything to do with the pwertrain is calculated, and compared to programming in the "ECM," or "PCM,"  engine control module, or powertrain control module, and if the calculations for whatever reason didn't compute out to the same, or nearly the same numbers programmed into the "ECM" then the EPC light will come on.  The same is true for the check engine light, although it is almost always associated with a failure in the emission control system.  I hope this sheds some light on your question, and is of some help in understanding more about your car.  Thanks Micah, and good luck.
