Volkswagen Repair: Screeching vw golf, vw golf gti, wheel bearings

Question
Hi was wondering if you could help. I own a VW Golf GTI and for a few months now the car has been making a screeching noise when you steer to the right. I have taken it to the garage as my partner thought it may be the wheel bearings but the garage said this is not the case and thought it may be the brakes, although these were done not long ago. As the car wasn't screeching when i took it to the garage he said its hard to tell what the problem was, however now the rain is back it has started again. Thinking about it now the car only seems to make a noise when the weather is wet or cold. Any ideas?

Answer
Hi, Vicky;  Sorry it took so long to get to your question, my computer broke, at home, so I've got to answer these questions after work.  Hope I didn't inconvenience you too much.
Screeching when wet, or cold could still be the brakes.  I wonder if the caliper is sticking?  The outer pad will look just fine, but the inner pad will be wearing away alot faster, and be thinner.  There is also another reason for screeching in the front brakes, as they are all "disc" style.  If the pad, or pads, vibrate inside the caliper they will create a high pitched noise that varies with each car, but any car with disc brakes can have this happen for that reason.  It could also be the "backing plate" that is behind the brake rotor, or disc.  If it got moved during the brake job, so that it now touches the rotor or disc, it will create a scraping/screeching noise that could vary with weather conditions.  I hope one of these suggestions, turns out to fix your problem.  Good luck, Vicky!
