Volkswagen Repair: 94 Golf, engine coolant, air pockets

Question
I have  a 94 golf and when i drive it for more then about 20 min it seems to overheat and the oil light comes on. i checked for oil and engine coolant? could it be the oil cooler? anything else?

Answer
My first impression is the thermostat is stuck shut, and won't allow the flow of coolant to the radiator.  Thermostats are cheap.  I would try this first.  If it doesn't solve your problem, at least in part, let me know here.  I hope this is of some service to you, Cam.  Remember to follow the instructions when you refill the system, too.  You don't want air pockets, so use an evacuation device to get the pressure/vacuum in the system to between 1.5, and 2 atmospheres, ie., 1.5 to 2 bar.
