Volkswagen Repair: 1999 VW Jetta AEG timing adjustment, crankshaft pulley, vibration damper

Question
I replaced the head gasket and now need to set/adjust the timing and timing belt tension. How do I do this?

Answer
Installing
Requirements
l   Pistons must not be positioned at TDC.
Work sequence
¨C   Place toothed belt on crankshaft pulley and coolant pump pulley (observe direction of rotation).
 Noted   With engine removed:
t   Install lower toothed belt guard and vibration damper/belt pulley.
Adjusting valve timing
NoteWhen turning the camshaft the crankshaft must not be at TDC. Danger of damage to valves/piston crown.

¨C   Align mark on camshaft with mark on toothed belt cover.
Engine installed: Indention on the timing toothed belt metal cover. It a Vertical slit and is black or the same color as the metal cover. Align this with the slit or cut on the crank pulley.

¨C   Turn crankshaft to TDC No. 1 cylinder (vehicles with a manual transmission).

¨C   Turn crankshaft to TDC No. 1 cylinder (vehicles with an automatic transmission).
With engine removed:

¨C   Position vibration damper at TDC No. 1 cylinder -arrows-.
¨C   Installed toothed belt on tensioning roller and camshaft pulley.
Tensioning toothed belt
Requirements
l   Engine must be no more than warm to the touch.
l   Camshaft pulley positioned at TDC for cylinder 1. Pulley has a hole on it and needs to be aligned with the arrow or line on the plastic gaurd on the valve cover. Look at it dead on at a left angle. when it is aligened and the crank is aligned with the notches then proceed. Not aligening these or Installing this incorrectly will cause major engine failure.
l   Before tensioning toothed belt, turn tensioning roller 5 times on to limit stop (in both directions) at eccentric using pin wrench.
Work sequence

¨C   Tension toothed belt by turning eccentric to left  with two hole pin wrench onto limit stop.
¨C   Release tension on toothed belt until notch -1- and indicator -2- align (use mirror). The notch is hard to see. Its behind the Tensioner. One is a arrow and one is a V. The V and the arrow line up when the tensioner is moved with the pin tool. Snap on makes one. Not going to find this tool at sears.
¨C   Tighten securing nut to 20 Nm.
¨C   Turn crankshaft two rotations in engine direction of rotation and set again to DTC No. 1 cylinder. When doing this it is important that last 45_ (1/8 turn) is completed without interruptions.
¨C   Check tension of toothed belt again. Specification: Indicator and notch align
Continued for completing installation of toothed belt
¨C   Install center and lower toothed belt guard
¨C   Install vibration damper/belt pulley. Tightening torque: 25 Nm
¨C   Install engine mounting to cylinder block. Tightening torque: 45 Nm
¨C   Install engine assembly mounting complete.
NoteInsert bolts into engine bracket before installing bracket
¨C   Align assembly mountings for engine and transmission ¡ú Chapter.
¨C   Assembly mounting torque settings ¡ú Chapter
¨C   Remove engine support device.
¨C   Install toothed belt guard upper part.
¨C   Install poly V-belt tensioning element. Tightening torque: 25 Nm
¨C   Install poly V-belt ¡ú Chapter.
¨C   Install coolant expansion tank.
¨C   Install power steering reservoir.
¨C   Install right side sound insulation:

¡ú Rep. Gr.50
¨C   Check engine oil level and top up, if necessary.
¨C   Install engine cover.
Next time you do a head gasket paint the belt on chain to the gear and repaint the new belt. If you are not comfortable with doing this job then take it in to the dealer. I've seen way to many people do a technical job to save money and end up buying a engine. Please contact me if you have any more questions.
