Volkswagen Repair: Odometer, oxnard st, target point

Question
I just purchased a 1974 SB Volkswagon 4sp...the odometer does not work so I have to keep data on gallons of gas used (300 galllons between oil changes?) enabling me a target point to change oil. I spoke to my technician and he said we had to find an odometer from a used VW. Do you have another solution to this problem?

Answer
Yes, check the oil directly to find out whether or not it is dirty. Black, gritty, sandy, or no viscosity are signs that the oil needs to be changed.
