Volkswagen Repair: 87 cabrio, town traffic, blue smoke

Question
1987 Cabriolet...it's been a little funky lately, and now it's stuck. Recently, it would act like it wanted to stall after 10 miles or so of highway driving, but I could work through it by holding down the clutch and revving it a bit. Then lately, that would happen in around town traffic. The other day, it stalled, wouldn't start, but after a rest I was able to start it and get it home. Today, it got me to work, then didn't want to start again. I checked the spark plugs & the distributor cap, and they seem fine. When the key was turned to on, I got out and came around, and I could hear what I think was the fuel pump. I did replace the fuel filter about 6 months ago. Last thing I did before I left it, I tried to start it. After a while of turning over, it finally caught. I smelled gas, but kept revving. The muffler sounded funny, like lots of little soft backfires(at a constant interval), and there was a lot of silver-blue smoke. When I put it in gear and released the clutch, I got about 6 feet before it died. I'm so sorry about the length here, but thought you should know all of the above. I'm at my wits' end. Please help. I can't afford a new car. Thank you so much. If there's anything else you need to know, my name is Chris, you can reach me at 813-417-7787 ANYTIME. I'll call you right back. Thanks again.

Answer
Chris, thank you for your question.  Sounds like you may have a couple of things going on here. One is the engine is probably out of timing.  Another could be that the fuel system is not adjusted properly.  If you have a carburetor or fuel injected engine, it would be best to have a qualified mechanic do the adjustment, unless you have a Bentley manual for that year model.  As far as the timing, you would need to use the instructions in a Bentley manual for that too.  The investment in a Bentley manual is well worth the 40 – 50$.
Hope that helps
