Volkswagen Repair: 1997 VW Passat GLX 2.8L VR6 Automatic, vw passat glx, rubber grommet

Question
I'm fairly certain my transmission fluid is low right now in my automatic transmission.  I don't see any way to check the level of it.

I would appreciate it if you could send me in the right direction on how and where to check the trans fluid in my car.  I just purchased it about 3 weeks ago.

I'm planning to order a repair manual for the car, but I really want to check this out as soon as I can.

Thank you for your time.

Dan

Answer
Dan, thank you for your question.  VW built two transmissions in 1996 to present that have no dipstick, only a filler hole.  As far as checking it, there will be a black rubber grommet in which you have to pry off with a screwdriver (be careful not to damage it).  Do not fill to the top but fill to around 1 inch below the hole or to the top of gears showing.
Hope that helps
