Volkswagen Repair: Wiper Motor, windshield wiper motor, vw beetle

Question
Don,

I have a 1968 VW Beetle that has a windshield wiper motor thats not operating properly. I took it out and cleaned it real good and it worked for a while, but then started slowing down to a real slow pace again. Do I need to replace the motor and if so, will another year such as a 1972 fit? The ones I find for the 1968 run about $160.00 but other years only run about $50.00. Also, is there anyway to get a rebuild kit for the one I have now? Thanks Don for any information you can give me on this!

Ron

Answer
Ron, thank you for your question.  Lubrication may be the problem.  It would be best to take it apart and clean out the grooves on the motor inside.  Also make sure that you DO NOT lube the brushes.  Do NOT use soap based grease, use Lithium base grease on the worm gear. Use engine oil (which ever type you are using SAE 30, 10w30, etc.) on all of the pivots.  Use an eye dropper for application to the pivot points.
Hope that helps
