Volkswagen Repair: 2000 VW New Beetle, o rielly, vw new beetle

2000 VW New Beetle..I bought this car Certified Pre-Owned in 2003. When the check engine light comes on is there always a problem with the vehicle or does VW just want you to bring the car in for service? Twice we have gotten a check engine light come on in the past few months and they charged us $45.00 just to reset it with nothing needing to be done to the car. Now it is on again and I don't know what to do?

Debby, thank you for your question.  The check engine light usually means that there is something wrong with a component(s) on the engine or emission controls.  You can also go to Autozone auto parts supply (if available) or O'rielly's and they can reset it for you.  They will also tell you if there is something truly wrong or not.
