Volkswagen Repair: Jetta Motor Mount Repair, volkswagon jetta, wheel chocks

Question
I have a 1999 Volkswagon Jetta with a broken driver's side motor mount.  First I'd like to know what a fair price for repair of it is.  Also, is it something that would be too difficult for my boyfriend (with limited car repair knowledge) to do himself, or is it an easy fix?  Help!

Answer
Becca, thank you for your question.  First, on the cost for replacement should run from $90 to as high as $600, depending upon how much labor is an hour and what else the shop finds wrong.  A few shops that I checked with wanted to know the VIN number to give me an accurate quote on a price.  You will want to find out how long it will take them, price of labor per hour they charge, and the cost of parts. On the 1999 Jetta, VW built 8 different combinations of engines in both a 4 and 6 cylinder configurations.  This is what will cause the price to be different from shop to shop.  Some take longer than others to repair.
Second, if you have a decent set of metric tools, floor jack, jack stands, wheel chocks, a level surface (a driveway or garage) and about 14 hours or more (worse case).  I replaced one sometime back on a gravel driveway and it took about 7 hours, since the jack would not move the way I wanted it to.  If you plan on doing it yourself (DIY), then you would also need to get the Bentley manual for a 99 Jetta, which runs between $25 and $50.  The mount runs from $35 to $70.
Hope that helps
