Volkswagen Repair: 2001 beetle sport timing belt, vw sport, sport timing

Question
Hi,

When should my timing belt be changed? I have a 2001 VW sport manual. And if it goes before I get it changed what will the damage be? Will it be fixable?

thanks :)

Answer
Heather, thank you for your question.  Normally, the timing belt should be replaced every 50,000 to 80,000 but best to replace around 65,000 miles.  If the belt goes while you are at highway speed the damage can be extensive, costing upwards of $3,000 to repair.  But if you are driving in a city at 35 MPH or lower then the damage will cost at most around $1400.  And yes it can be fixed but it can cost a lot!
Hope that helps
