Volkswagen Repair: wheel bearings, rear wheel bearings, auto parts shop

Question
1969 Beetle Repack then replace the rear wheel bearings.
I am having an extremely difficult time getting the inner ball bearing in the carrier. It goes in approximately 1/4 of the way and will not go any further. I am reluctant to beat it in with too much force because I don't want to destroy the bearing. I have never had this much trouble with the inner bearing before. I know this is the correct bearing because when I took the stub axle out the bearing came out with the stub axel.

Thanks

Answer
Eddie, Thank you for your question.  The best help I can give you is to read fully the 1966-1969 Bentley manual, Chapter 5 (transmission and Rear axle) pages 84 – 87. It shows a couple of special tools that may or may not be available at an auto parts shop or a mobile tool truck (like Snap-On, MAC, or Cornwell).  But it appears that you must have the bearing lined up perfectly for it to slide back on.
Hope that helps
