Volkswagen Repair: repair, beetle bug, vw dealership

i have a 98 beetle bug. where the mileage is the window went blank and it printed "service 1". what does this mean, what is this the code for, and how much can i expect to pay?

I'm not sure but I would assume it's a built in way of telling you it's time for some sort of routine maintenance. I'd call or stop by your local VW dealership and ask the service manager. You wouldn't need to have it repaired there but at least maybe find out what's going on and take it to your regular mechanic. I hope this helps!
