Volkswagen Repair: Brakes, brake job, happy new year

Question
I have a Passat 2000 V6 4 Motion with 30,000 miles. I call the dealer and they want over $600 for a brake job. I took it to Sears and they told me all I need is rear pads (The service person was not sure about resurfacing the rotors. The front pads still look good. I knew I needed a brake job because I step on the brakes and I have to step on the brakes deeper than before and the car does not stop in as short of a distance as before.
My Questions are:
1) Is it sufficient to change pads and maybe resurface the rotors on the rear end ?
2) If front ones seemed OK, do not touch them ?
3) The rear rotors have a groove in them, I am assuming that is what they claim needs to be resurface or rotors have that one groove, or are they suppose to be completely flat ?

Answer
Juan,
Sorry for the delayed response...I hope I'm not too late! If the front pads and rotors look good I'd leave them alone. I'm not sure if the rear rotors are supposed to have a groove in them or not. If it's on both and dead center, I'd say they came that way. You can probably have the rotors trimmed up a little but don't exceed the min. thickness. When buying the rear pads, ask for the ones that are easy on the rotors (softer). Good luck and happy new year!
