Volkswagen Repair: 96 Jetta wont start, slow response, vws

Question
I have a 96 Jetta that wont start all it does is turn over we have checked the fuel pump and the fuel pump works,we believe we have spark is there away to check the timing belt to see if it is intact or do you think we are looking in the wrong places for this problem

Answer
Keith,
Sorry for the slow response! If the timing belt was broke, the motor would crank fast and sound different while cranking. I'm not very experienced in watercooled VWs but I think you can take the dist. cap off to see if the rotors turning while somebody runs the starter. If you have compression, air, fuel and spark, the motor should run. I wish I could be of more help to you on this! Good luck!
