Volkswagen Repair: cooling system, bars leaks, car factories

Question
just bought a 99 jetta and the previous owner admitted it had a leak in a "hose".  it was loosing coolant slowly up to last night when my son could not get 10 miles with out the light comming on.  i see a pool of fluid (facing the car) on the top of the engine / transaxel.  don;t see anything under the car.  there appears to be none in the oil.  but i can not find where it is leaking from.  there is a hose and connection going into the side of the engine just above this area.  any suggestions about how to find it or if these cars tend to leak from a particular place?  it has about 100k miles and seem so to run fine otherwise.

Answer
I don't really have much experience with the late model water cooled VWs but I'd suggest having somebody pressure check your cooling system, if they have the proper adapters. I've had good experience with the brown tablets from Bars Leaks. They come 6 to a pack but I'd try just one or two. Make sure you crumble it up before adding it to your cooling system. Supposedly, car factories use these in some new cars. Good luck!
