Volkswagen Repair: VW Vanagon, diesel vanagon, vw vanagon

Question
I want to buy a VW vanagon to convert to run on biodiesel/
veggie fuel - therefore I need a diesel Vanagon which were only
made in the early 80s. I don't think that the vanagon came with
Automatic transmission then but I need it. So what is the
difficulty/cost associated with changing a Manual tranmission in
a early 80's diesel Vanagon over to AT? is it even possible?
Thank you for your time. Also would it be cheaper/better to buy
a later model vanagon with AT and change the engine to diesel?
Thanks.

Answer
Hey Richard,
I don't have alot of Vanagon experience but I'd think it would be easier to buy a late Vanagon with AT and swap the gas engine for a diesel. I'm pretty sure the diesel (Rabbit style) will bolt up to the trans....not sure about the flywheel/flexplate to torque convertor compatibility. You'll need to fabricate all of your exhaust from the manifold down and rework your throttle hook up. I've never done this swap and I'm sorry that I can't be of much help to you. You might try contacting Calif. Import Parts at 1-800-313-3811...they sell alot of Vanagon parts and they might know or know someone with more info on this conversion. Good luck with this!
