Volkswagen Repair: Power Locks, blown fuse, four locks

Question
The power locks on my 1996 VW Golf are unresponsive.  What could I look at to fix the problem?

Answer
James, my main line of VW repair is the older, air cooled VWs but I'll try to point you in the right direction. I'm sure you've already checked the basic things like a blown fuse or a bad switch. I know they're known to have broken wires inside the rubber boots where the wires go from the hinge pillars into the door shells. One broken wire could possibly shut down all four locks, depending on where it is. If you have a 12V test light, check for power going into the switches and at the power lock actuators. As with any VW, make sure all the grounds are clean and secure. Good luck!
