Volkswagen Repair: heating, phillips screws, heater fan

Question
Hi, hope you maybe able to help me out the heating in my 1990 VW Golf does not come on. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks

Answer
Chad,

I'm not sure but I think you mean the heater fan doesn't come on?

Most of the time the heater fan motor siezes up and needs to be replace with a new resistor as well.

If so do you have A/C or not?

Without A/C is easy. Pull down the foam under the right side dash. Pull gently down on the flat tab, and turn the fan motor 1/4 turn to release. Unplug the harness and install the new one.

With A/C you'll need to take the glovebox door off, by removing the hinge pins. Then remove the lower shelf and foam cover. Take out the screw between the dash and the door.  Then remove all the phillips screws that hold in the fan. Unplug the wires and remove the fan.  Then remove the resistor in the heater box and replace it.  Install the new motor in two parts, separate the plastic cover, and insert the motor, then slide the cover back on and screw in.

Good luck,

Paul
