Volkswagen Repair: no power after installation, volkswagen jetta glx, pioneer 4600

Question
i have a 1997 volkswagen jetta glx with a bose system. i just installed a pioneer 4600. before screwing in all the bolts i tested the power and everything was working fine. after i was screwing in the last 3 bolts, i heard a static/crackling sound. paying no attention to it i kept going. all of a sudden, the power from the receiver shut off. i checked every fuse on the driver side and even checked the fuse on the receiver. everythings fine. when i wired the receiver to the main battery, i got power. luckily i didnt shortcircuit anything in the radio. whats weird tho is that when i turn on the engine the receiver beeps about 5 times and stops. this tells me that power is supplied somewhere but i dont know how to fully turn it on. if not the fuses, and the receiver works, where could the other malfunction be?

Answer
Ryan,

You need to supply the radio with battery (constant) power for the radio memory, and also ignition power (grey w/blue stripe) so it will turn off and on with the key. Your radio ground should be connected to a brown wire in the cars harness. If any of these are wrong you could cause power to backfeed through another circuit, which may cause your symptoms.

Good luck,

Paul
