Volkswagen Repair: power loss-backfiring, vw gti, airflow sensor

I have an '86 vw gti 8v. I have experienced a significant power loss. I am getting backfiring through the fuel ditributor- the air intake. I can hear it pop, and see the rubber boot over the airflow sensor bulge. I have recently replaced ignition cable, distributor cap, primary fuel pump. any ideas?

Did it start after you replaced the cap and wires?
Check your timing.  The firing order is 1342, clockwise, with number one cylinder closest to the timing belt, and number one rotor position is marked on the top edge of the distributor with the cap removed.
