Volkswagen Repair: Two problems: 2001 Jetta, oil leak drain plug and rear brakes wear faster than front, rear rotors, oil leaks

Question
Is there a common problem with 2001 Jetta GLS (2.0L) having slow oil leaks from the drain plug. This has been happening for a while and after several oil changes. Someone told me that if you buy an oil filter at the dealer it comes with a brass washer for the drain plug because of this problem.

Second problem: My back rims have a lot more brake dust build-up over the same period of time than the front. The dealer already replaced the rear pads (disc) at 35K miles. Someone told me the reason is because of the softer brake pad material. I have been trying to compare other Jetta's. Is this normal?

Answer
Jay,
I always replace the drain plug seal when I do an oil change, and have never had a problem with leaks.

As for your rear brake wear, I've noticed that the rear rotors rust and get pitted because they don't get used enough, and handbrake cables will sieze up causing the rear brakes to drag. If the rear pads and rotors have been replaced, and your cables are good, try pulling the handbrake on when you get home and the handbrake stop the car once in a while, this will cleanup the rotors.
