Volkswagen Repair: 96 Jetta 2.0, vehicle speed sensor, jetta 2

Question
I am the second owner of a '96 Jetta GL 2.0 about 100k miles (broken vehicle speed sensor). I have had the car since 2000 when it was @ 50k miles. This car was purchased in NC spent 2 years in upstate NY and is now back in NC.

The car has had regular routine maintance done since I've owned it, and has been a solid car.

The problems began about 2 months ago when the starter failed. No biggie I push started it, got it home and replaced the starter.

Now the car is dead again. This time it would die while driving, then not immediately restart. It would restart after a short wait, trying to crank it intermittently while waiting(the longest it was left was overnight). This scenario happened about four times then the car finally shut down.

It will crank.
There is no spark at the plugs or coming from the coil. I have replaced the coil and the distributor.
There is still no spark coming from the coil.

I have read about and looked for the ECU relay in position #3 on the relay board but on my car there is nothing in that position and no relays that match the numbers that are reportedly on the relay.

Do you have any idea why this car is not sparking?

Answer
Matt,

Check the wiring harness at the distributor, sometimes the wires brake and you lose your signal from the hall generator.  Also check the conditions of the ground wires to the head ( brown ) by the heater hoses, they often break as well.

Good Luck,

Paul
