hey i would like to know if i could get a cost total on a new clutch for 1997 golf gl 4cyl.  i also need to know if the car doesnt have reverse what the promblem could be and would it be worth getting the car for 500 dollars with 50,000 miles and fixing it.

I don't know where you live and therefore could not give you a price.  In Ontario, Canada you would pay approximately $600.  The problem with reverse could be the shifter linkage at the transmission, have them check that as well.
