Question

Hey, thanks for the reply, Would the job me as messy even if i do not have AC in my car.  I recently put BARS leak seal in the system.  its gonna be getting cold soon, and i don't think i should be breathing in the coolant fumes. any idea how much a job like this could cost from VW?

I have a 97 golf without AC, when I turn my heat on, I smell coolant.  i've never worked on an A3 golf. any ideas?
Answer -
Roni,

Your heatercore is leaking, and will need to be replaced.
I would not recommend that you attempt this job, as it is very complicated and messy.  If you choose to continue on your own, check out my instructions in a previous question to Paul.

You may also want to check with your local dealer to see if it may be covered under a recall.

Good Luck,

Paul

Answer
Roni,

I don't know where you live, or what the labour rates are in your area. In the Toronto area heatercore replacements run anywhere from $300 to $500. Without A/C does make the job easier, but just as messy. Bars leak is not a good idea, as I've seen it clog the heatercore completely, resulting in no heat at all.

Good Luck,

Paul
