Volkswagen Repair: thermostat, thermoswitch, temperature guage

I HAVE 96 VJETTA ,4 CYL,BUT THERES A PROBLEM WITH TEMPERATURE GUAGE, IT HIGH, AFTER CONSULTATION I GOT A ANSAWER THAT THE THERMOSTAT MAY BE NOT WORKING, GUESS WHAT AFTER OPENING THE PLACE WHERE THERMOSTAT IS GOING TO BE THERE WAS NO THERMOSTAT, THE COMPUTER AND BOOK STATES THAT A CIRCULAR THERMOSTAT IS TO BE, BUT THIS HAS GOT A OVAL KIND IS THAT POSSIBLE .

Your thermostat is round and is located under the waterpump, inside the lower rad hose fitting, above the powersteering pump.
I think you took off the fitting at the front of the head and they do distort and become oval.  
If I'm right you'll need to replace that fitting as well.  

Note!

Before you change the thermostat. Check that your rad fan is working. Often the thermoswitch in the rad (Under the battery) is faulty or the wiring to it.
