Paul, appreciate your help so far, boot has no cracks nor do I hear any whistles, but heres something I didnt inform you that may help, the rough idle is not constant, sometimes it almost idles perfect then gets rougher then goes back to smoother. Also, upon startup whether the engines cold or hot, the car will idle perfect for about 45 seconds then idle rough..

Question - Sorry for the lack of info, the top end was redone due to the timing belt snapping and bending some valves so I had it done. I have had the engine  checked for vacuum leaks and had ones found fixed. And the timing has been checked twice. Also the compression for the engine is good. Let me know if you might nedd any additional info to help you with your diagnosis. Thanks...

Hello Paul hope you can help me out. I had asked this quesition the previous person from all experts but his suggestion did not work. Here it is, I have a 1990 vw passat, just had the top end redone, car has since developed a rough idle problem. Upon startup car idles normal for approx 30 seconds, then idles rough. Above 1100 rpm car has normal power. Installed new ignition wires, timing has been checked, and the switches on the throttle body have now been checked for continuity, I am leaning now towards a bad fuel injector. Can you suggest anything else? Thanks..

Michael,

I'm not sure why the head was redone, and if your static timing is OK.  I may need to get that information later, but before you start changing parts do two basic things.

1. Run some engine cleaner through a vacuum line, or add it to your gas tank.

2. Take the car out for a good run to clean out the system, and then check your compression.

Your readings should be over 100 psi, but more importantly they should be within 5 psi of eachother.

Good Luck,

Paul

Michael,

Sounds like everything is ok with that repair, but I wonder if you may have a crack in the intake boot (black rubber air tube between the air filter and the throttle body).  Start the engine and move the plastice tube between the two rubber boots and listen  for a whistle.
The rubber does crack with age and may have broken from all the work done on the car.

Try that and let me know,
Paul

Answer
Michael,

This may sound dumb, but has the car  been tuned up in the year?  I just answered another question, and I wonder if your problem is the same.  I told Amanda to check her records to see how old the fuel filter is, you might want to do the same.
It's very difficult to troubleshoot some of these problems without seeing for myself and hearing the engine.

Sorry it's taking this long,

Paul
