Volkswagen Repair: electrical, grey stripe, backlights

Question
Hi Paul --

I am having trouble with the interior guage backlights on my 2000 Jetta.  The guage lights and warning lights work, but not the backlights that allow me to see it all at night.  Do you have any idea what the problem might be?  If not, know where I might find an answer?

Thanks,

Carter

Answer
Carter,
It could be one of two common problems.

The dimmer in your headlight switch has burned out.

Remove the left vent and push the release lever to the right and pull out the switch.  With a test light check the dimmer output for power. I think it is still blue with a grey stripe.  Just move the dimmer to confirm.

If current is leaving the switch properly you'll need to continue to remove the instrument cluster and check the bulbs.  If they come on when moved remove them and apply electrical grease to the contacts and reuse.  If not replace with new bulbs, but remember to use electrical grease to make a good contact.

Good Luck,

Paul
