Volkswagen Repair: VW 1988 Jetta, rear muffler, exaust system

Question
Hi
I have a 1988 Jetta that I would like to replace the exaust system just from the cat. converter on out to the rear muffler. My problem is I can't tell which system this car uses, I am getting confused with PF,RD,RV ect. What I do know is that the header pipe before joining the cat. conv. has a double gasket with six studs that the pipe fits on. I believe the center muffler is side ways not straight, then feeds back to the rear muffler.I just cant't tell whether it's a PF RD RV  or what. How can I tell before I order the parts so I don't get the wrong system.  I looked under the hood and the only thing I see is AG , is their any other place on the engine  or the Vin# that can tell me whether the system is for a RD,PF RV or is their another way to find the correct exaust system for this car. It has a 1.8L eng., auto trans., 8 valve, A/C, SOHC. I don't know if you need any more info. I think I covered every thing that's needed to order the parts for this car's exaust system. Thank you Sincerely Laura

Answer
Good morning! Easy answer, I believe your car is a RV, unless it's a GTI or CARAT, only then is it a PF.
It cannot be an RV they end in 1987.
It cannot be a PL that is the 16 valve engine.

The good news is the parts you need are the same for a RV or a PF.

(A little tip!) Order new muffler hangers, and install them at the same time.

Good Luck, this should be an easy job.
