Volkswagen Repair: Volkswagen cabrio starting problems, volkswagen golf cabrio, volkswagen cabrio

Question
Volkswagen Golf Cabrio GL Auto, 1457 cc

Hi,

This problem has been going on for a while now. It happens if I have been driving for over 20 minutes. I stop the car, turn the engine off, and then the car won't restart for about 30 minutes. I have had the immobiliser checked, new battery, new starter motor, all relevant wiring checked and WD40 put on. The interesting thing is that the mechanic put some kind of plastic covers over the wires leading to the starter motor, and now, when the problem occurs, it restarts after about 10 minutes. This leads me to think that the issue is heat related - when the engine cools off, it restarts. Can you shed any light on this frustrating problem?

Regards

Max

Answer
This is a major problem with Automatic VW's.  The starter is in a poor location and overheats after so long of a drive.  Your mechanic was on the right track for a solution but didn't go far enough.  There is actually a kit available from the dealer to correct this problem or you can do it yourself. Basically the wires that the mechanic covered need to be replaced.  There is also a heat sheild that should cover the starter.  Replace the wires and get the sheild and see how that goes.

Good Luck,
Ryan
