Volkswagen Repair: Engine lost power, vw passat, clutch cable

Question
 Hi,
i just changed my engine for a fresher one, but some how there is not so much power like it used to be, the seller definately screwed me, but i want to fix the problem myself, also it  smokes sometimes for a minute after a long standing by hot weather.
From my old engine i have a good cylinder head and am trying to overhaul that thing to put it on my current fresher block.
One more thing it makes a squeeking noise in the area of the belts on the left side(if you stand at the popped up hood), which grows at the acceleration.
It is a VW Passat 1990, 2.0 Liter, 16 valves. Automatic transmission.

Thank you very much.

                      P.S.
If my trany dies, can i put a manual trany on the same engine?

Answer
You should do a compression test on your new motor and find out what kind of shape this "new" motor is in.  Usaully the first thing to go on the 16V is the valve guides which would justify the burning oil,  redoing your old head sounds like the best place to start.  You should look into getting a good repair manual for your model so you can do some troubleshooting. You can put in a manual transmission, heres the list of parts you will need,

-tranny (there are many 5-speeds that will fit so choose your ratios and buy a tranny that suits your driving style)
-throttle body ( off a manual car)
-pedal cluster
-clutch cable
-clutch
-flywheel
-pressure plate
-shifter and linkage
