Volkswagen Repair: engine idle problem, computer crap, vacuum leak

Question
Hi there,

I have a SEAT Ibiza 2.0i, 8V 97, this has the same engine as the golf. The engine does not always idle and keeps dipping then cutting out if i let the rev's die down. This problem is intermittent and the temperature make no difference. Sometimes it will not idle at all even after restarting the engine. Is this an electrical or mechanical problem? Any help would be great.

Thanks.

Answer
Sorry it has taken me so long--computer crap
The problem is most likely a vacuum leak.  You are getting the wrong fuel mixture which means extra air.  Check all vacuum hose connections or hoses on the intake side of the motor.  Pull off a hose and look at the end of it...is the end flared or cracked or hard(can you pinch it closed between your fingers?)  If it doesn't completely pinch closed, then either you are a weakling or the hose has hardened.  Cut off an inch and fit the new "end" on the connection.  Note that it is harder to get on.  That is a better fit.  Check others.  For leaking gaskets, what I use is a spray bomb of disc brake cleaner- it doesn't harm rubber.  And spray the gaskets while the engine is idling.  If the engine picks up speed when you spray a certain spot-there's your leak.  You could also recheck the hoses; do around the spark plugs, head gasket, etc.  If you got to replace hoses cause they would be too short - yougot to replace.
