Volkswagen Repair: CAR SAT 4 SIX MONTHS, vw jetta, jetta 2

I HAVE JUST RETURNED FROM A SIX MONTH DEPLOYMENT IN THE PERSIAN GULF.  WHILE I WAS GONE I KEPT MY CAR IN A STORAGE UNIT.  I THOUGHT THAT I HAD TAKEN ALL OF THE PREVENTITIVE MEASURES HOWEVER, APPARENTLY I DIDN'T.  PRIOR TO LEAVING I FILLED MY CAR TO THE TOP WITH GAS AND ADDED A FUEL STABILIZER, DISCONNECTED BATTERY ETC.  3 MONTHS BEFORE THAT I CHANGED MY PLUGS, WIRES, DISTRIBUTOR CAP, FUEL FILTER OIL/FILTER, AIR FILTER, SERVICED TRANSMISSION.  AFTER MY TUNE UP I HAD A BRIEF PROBLEM BECAUSE ONE OF MY "NEW" WIRES WAS BAD.  WHEN I RETURNED (SIX MOTHS LATER)AND STARTED MY 98 VW JETTA 2.0L IT IDLED REAL ROUGH.  I FIGURED THAT IT WOULD SMOOTHEN OUT, WHICH IT DID.  BUT, NOW WHEN I DRIVE AND I REACH ABOUT 2200 +/- RPMS MY ENGINE LOOSES ALL FUEL TO THE ENGINE AND BEGINS TO COAST. IT SEEMS AS THOUGH I CAN NOT GIVE GAS CONSISTENTLY FOR ANY LONGER THAN 30 SECONDS.  TO RECOVER ALL I HAVE TO DO IS LET OFF OF THE GAS FOR A SECOND AND THEN I CAN BEGIN TO ACCELERATE AGAIN.  I AM FORCED TO DRIVE IN SPURTS. MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND IT READ 1. FAULTY SPEED IDLE SENSOR ($328.00) 2. MISFIRE NR1 CYLINDER.  BEFORE I SPEND 328.00 TO CHANGE OUT MY SPEED IDLE SENSOR IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE THAT I SHOULD CHECK?  PLEASE HELP.

Answer
I would first start with the battery connections.  Pull the clamps off, and sand the lead clamps clean and silvery on the inside and the same goes for the posts.  Both terminals(especially negative)  Check other wires as well (after all we are playing with an electrical device that has its shorts in a knot)  For the misfiring cylinder you might want to throw in some fuel injector cleaner in your fuel tank.  Can't hurt.
