Volkswagen Repair: on a 1985 Vanagon fuel injection H4 1.9 liter, reservoir tank, hose clamps

on the reservoir tank ,when the van gets hot it leaks the antifreeze,is the thermostat broke (no good) and needs replacing ..?..i am living in Mexico do i need the thermostat to operate vehicle ..?

Thermostat is not the problem.  The reservoir tank itself may be split and shows under pressure(when engine is hot).Do you need a thermostat?  It brings your engine to operating temp sooner 160 to 190 degrees.  Does it get that hot outside?  Again it is not the thermostats fault.  Bad hose clamps or connections should be looked at too.
