Volkswagen Repair: gas pedal, mechanism works, return spring

Question
i stepped into my 66 bug this morning and when i turned it
ovre the gas pedal fell to the floor .  I am looking to see
how the mechanism works and im not sure if somethng
just came loose or it has to do with my fuel pump? please send
me any info if you have experienced this or know what has
happened

Answer
Gas pedal is connected to the carb with a long piece of wire and the return spring is on the carb.  So either the hook behind the pedal is broken or the wire cable has slipped oout of the collar at the carb or the wire is broken in the middle.  Nuthing to do with pump.  Easiest way to check is look behind the gas pedal to be sure it is fastened; then look at the carb.  If it is also fastened, disconnect at the carb and pull on the wire to see if it comes out from the pedal end which it should not.  If you pull the wire out, you gotta replace.  The new wire goes in from the pedal to the carb.  The wear point is around the rear wheel area.
