Volkswagen Repair: OIl weight, vw jetta, recommended oil

Question
I just buy a used 1998 vw jetta (63,000 mi) and  
in order to make it run perfectly I need to know what is the recommended oil brand and weight for this model/year?

VW is funny that way.  When the old air cooled bugs were around and they brought multi grade motor oil (eg 10W30) VW preferred that you stick with 30W or 20W for the winter.  I am certain that they have made the switch over but suspect that they would rather you use 10W40 instead of 10w30.  Brands ? just a good oil.
