Volkswagen Repair: Jetta Oil Level, auto salvage yard, jetta gl

Question
I have an 86 jetta gl with 1.8 liter fuel injected engine.  I bought it well used and don't know history.  It leaks some oil, and I noticed that the dip stick does not look like it was original equipment.  Is there a standard for distance from top of dip stick tube to oil high and low level marks for this engine?

Answer
You gotta get the proper dip stick.  What if this is longer than original equip.?  Then you would have less oil in there and starve it for lubrication... if the stick is too short, then too much oil is in there and you lose horsepower as your motor is sloshing excessively in the oil and you will blow oil seals left right and centre and burn oil.  Go to auto salvage yard.  I wouldn't buy it new.
