Volkswagen Repair: 1985 volkswagen vanagon gl, volkswagen vanagon, tying shoe laces

Question
I have recently bought the 85 vanagon gl for $720.00 . I have to put a new clutch assembly in.This includes everything the clutch needs, bearings, plates, flywheel, ect ect. how much should this (on average) cost.not inclucing labor, assuming i am to do this my self.and is it worth it?The engine runs and sounds great.

Answer
First off, you live where you live??? and I live where I do??? so what can I say - I don't know the average cost of cars there or parts or anything.   If the engine sounds goood well the clutch had to go sometime and you got it when it did.  Now, how many jobbers(auto stores that sell vw parts) can you find in your area and the cost of the parts.  The dealer is out of the question of course as the cost of the parts from them probably cost over a $1000(you pay for the official vw stamp on the parts).  A rebuilt clutch will do okay as well.
If you have ever changed clutches, this is no problem provided you got the tools and lifts...the first time is the hardest as you gotta figure it out, after that its like tying shoe laces.
I mean I got my 84 rabbit 8 mos ago for 900 and had to put in another 700 into it and that does not include a clutch.  Is it worth it, to me it is.
Average out the cost comparing it to Toyotas and Nissans...still not much you can do there except getting used parts off a wreck.  Its up to you.
