Volkswagen Repair: Jetta chokin, volkswagon jetta, diesel rabbit

Question
96 Volkswagon Jetta.  1 week ago my car died on the highway, I was slowing down to take the off ramp and when I went to accelerate, I couldnt get any gas pressure and suddenly the car shut off and came to a rolling stop. I had a tune up done on the car the next day and for about 6 days the car seem to run fine until the other night  when I went to accelerate from a stop sign and the car seem to choke a bit. Had trouble getting gas pressure again, but I was able to get pressure again and kept going for about 5 miles when at around 65 miles/hr, when i would hit the gas a little it started stuttering, like choking, and i lost pressure.  I came to a light to turn left and when the speedometer read about 20 i had no gas pressure again. The power steering went out and I had to coast into a parking lot.  My check engine light had come on.  The odd thing is that both times it died i had let it sit for several hours and tried to start it again and it started. I drove it again this morning, it started up with out a problem, but of course the check engine light is still on. Got any ideas?

Answer
Check the fuel line from the fuel pump to the injection pump.
I'm gonna tell you a related story and you take it from there.
I drive a diesel Rabbit.  Drove over some railway tracks at about 30 mph that crossed the road.  Drove for another 2 miles down the road and then my car lost power, I could put in the clutch and rev it but as soon as I let out the clutch there was no power and the car died.   I could restart it, but could not put it in gear without it dying.  I looked under the hood, saw nothing amiss.  Reved it, dropped the clutch and went about 100 ft and the car died again.  Would not start until I let it sit for awhile - went 200 ft and started to die.  Could not see the problem.
From my fuel filter(mounted on the fender/shock I have a clear plastic line to the injection pump.  I could see it was full of fuel.  Like I said, I could not see a problem.   I touched the fuel line, and all of a sudden it was full of air bubbles.   My fuel line had a hair line crack in it from the underside which would only open when I let out the clutch and the motor twisted on its mounts.  The flexibility of the hose has disappeared ...it had become brittle as glass...and cracked, on the underside, when I went over that bump (RRtracks)  I asked vw for another fuel line and they were quoting some$140. figure??? For a plastic line?    NOT   Went to the local marine shop and bought the same for a couple of bucks 2 years ago, but now I pay attention and will probably change it again this summer(or at least have additional hose in the car for the next time)
It may be that simple.  If you got a plastic line clear or black chances are it has chemically changed to something rock hard(you can't squeeze it between your pinky's).  See if you can lift it up and down like the distance you figure it would flop without the loss of fuel.
It's an idea.
