Volvo Repair: Engine Seize?, piston slap, volvo specialist

Question
On the drive into work today, the engine on my 1990 Volvo Wagon (740 GL 210k miles) simply cut out. It does have a small oil leak, but I checked it two days ago and it was at 3/4. I drove about 80 miles yesterday, but that seems like a lot of oil to go through if the engine is seized up. I did not see smoke, there was no burning smell and no loud clanking noises ("metal on metal" is how I've heard it described). I did have a vacuum leak that was repaired two months ago, but the engine did the same thing then. Can you reassure me that this is not, in fact, a seized engine? Thank you.

Answer
Ray, sounds like a possible timing belt breaking but without examining the car, I would only be speculating on if the engine was seized or not.  These engines are bricks.  Even if you did seize it, most times you can squirt pentrating oil in the cylinders and the engine will break free again.  The end result would be a piston slap or bearing failure.  Again, would have to inspect car to be sure.  In the mean time, I would take it to your Volvo specialist.  Roger
