Volvo Repair: Lube Job, hanes manual, drive shaft

Question
I have a 1970/71 Volvo 144S and i am wondering if i need to get a lube job done. I have been having trouble getting a straight answer. I know nothing about mechanics, but my dad was a truck driver and he used to lube his truck every night after work. So When the manual mentioned it, that is what came to mind(even though it is completely different). I believe there are 11 or 12 nipples the hanes manual refers to but i dont know if that is at time of manufacturing or a yearly thing. I think half my problem is terminology because i keep getting oil changes.....

Answer
Terry, the nipples you refer to are called grease zircs. In the good ole days, ask dad, an oil change was referred to a s an L.O.F. (Lube, oil and filter.) They would only change the filter every other time and lube (grease the chassis) every other time also. I would definitely have the lube done. ESPECIALLY the drive shaft u-joints. Do at the recommended intervals from Volvo or at least twice a year. Lubing the chassis parts regularly will make them last indefinitely. If the place you are taking it to advertisises a LOF, there should be NO x-tra charge. If they are advertising an oil and filter change only, it's probably not included. Ask the question if it's included, and make your decision based on that.
Nowadays, they've done away with the lubable chassis points. A really big shame in my book!
