Volvo Repair: 1993 Volvo 940 fuel gauge and temp gauge out, mylar sheet, copper strips

Question
My fuel gauge reads empty (with no light) most of the time, but can
sometimes go to 3/4, regardless of how much fuel is in the car. For a while it
would get stuck, and hitting the dash would solve this, now it won't anymore.
Around the same time as this totally died, my temp gauge died as well. Are
these related? My mechanic says it will take a lot of work to figure out what it
is, but it seems to me like it could just be something simple.

Answer
Yes, it is simple. Usually, just replace the entire circuit board for the guage assembly. It is the blue mylar sheet with all the copper strips in it. Otherwise, yard used may be more cost effective. Befor all that, be sure to clean all the cluster connections (wire plugs) first.
